According to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) there are 50 BS/MD programs available. Unfortunately, that number is not even close.
Traditionally, when people talk about BS/MD programs they are talking about programs where students apply to college and medical school at the same time. Several of the programs listed by the AAMC are actually programs that are available after the student has started college. For instance, the Junior Honors Medical Program at the University of Florida College of Medicine, although called a BS/MD program, actually has students apply to the medical school during their sophomore year in college. Several of the BS/MD programs listed by the AAMC are of this type of program.
Moreover, there are many actual BS/MD programs that are not listed by the AAMC.
So, how many colleges have agreements with medical colleges for a true BS/MD program? Around 120. Yes, there are about 120 colleges that admit freshman to a BS/MD program associated with the college. This is a somewhat fluid number because some programs have closed in the past few years and several new ones have begun. But if you are looking to apply to one of these programs there are many more available than the AAMC lists.
I am constantly asked for a list of the programs. I also have seen lists of programs on other websites better seo though web design that are so woefully wrong that it is misleading to anyone try to understand these programs. So, I decided to provide the list to my faithful readers.
A brief note before the list. This is a fluid list. Programs are created and programs end on a regular basis. To the best of my knowledge, this list is accurate as of the date of this post. If anyone is aware of another BS/MD program, please let me know and I will add it to the list.
These programs are the true BS/MD programs where you apply as a high school senior. These are not programs where you apply to medical school as a freshman or sophomore in college.
Some medical schools have BS/MD programs with different undergraduate colleges and the list indicates the undergraduate college and the medical school if they differ. If only one school is listed it is both the college and medical school.

Hi,
My daughter is interested in BS/MD program in USA.
She is a Canadian studying in Canada. She is grade 11 studying IB program.
1) Can I get the rank of the university or college with BS/MD program?
2) How many international student could enter the university or college of BS/MD program?
3) I would like to know how your guide for BS/MD program is processing.
Thank you and best regards.
Theresa
Todd Johnson says
Theresa,
BS/MD programs are not ranked and even if they were rankings really aren’t of much use since the ranking depends entirely on the criteria used to determine the ranking.
International students have limited options for BS/MD programs as most only accept US residents or those here on permanent visas. I have a blog post coming out in the next few weeks on international students and BS/MD programs and rather than jump the gun on that, I will send you a private message with the list of BS/MD programs available for international students.
The 2014 edition of my book, BS/MD Programs-The Complete Guide, came out last week. Here is a link to the book on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/BS-MD-Programs-The-Complete-Guide/dp/0983213267/
Elham says
Is there any BS/MD program for international student little bit more cheaper than it shoes in forbes? cause i search whole week and i found out all the BS/MD programs costs more than 50000-70000 dollars. I think that much might be not alot in US but in other countries like India ,Afghanistan, china with that ammount you can pay for all the 6 or 7 years of MBBS programs. so please if there is any BS-MD cheaper than 25000-30000 dollars not only the tuition fees but all the cost please email me with the requirements of the university.regards Elham hemat.
sorry for any miss words in this artical cause of typing so fast i might miss some words please for give if so.
Todd Johnson says
The only cheaper programs are those for residents of particular states where that program is located. Nothing for international students.
Take care.

Rabia says
Hi, I was wondering what Bs/MD programs can Canadian students apply to in the US that would give them a higher chance of being accepted?
Thank you
Todd Johnson says
Rabia and Rizwan,
Here is a link to a post I did earlier this year listing the BS/MD programs that will consider admitting international students. http://cap1.wpengine.com/bsmd-programs/bsmd-programs-admit-international-students/
Arvind says
What is the best state to be resident of to be considered for instate programs. Which sates have highest number of seats for BS/MD program? Specifically, wondering between: Indiana, Pennsylvania, Texas, Illinois
Todd Johnson says
The largest number of in state seats is most likely Ohio although Texas has a large number of BS/MD seats as well.
Eric Santana says
For most schools what are the credentials you need to be accepted into a BS/MD program?
Todd Johnson says
Eric,
Typically a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.8 and a 1,400 on the critical reading and math portion of the SAT or a 30 on the ACT are minimums to be considered. Higher grades and test scores will make you more competitive. In addition you need significant health care volunteering, research experience and doctor shadowing experience. Finally something to show maturity and leadership is very helpful.
Chandra says
Hello, I was invited for the University of South Alabama College of Medicine Early Acceptance Program interview and I also received full tuition. I can’t seem to find much information regarding the program online besides the basic information about the conditions for acceptance into medical school and that you lost your position if you apply out. Do you happen to know how well regarded their medical school is and this program? I also applied to schools such as Washington University in St. Louis and Northwestern University for undergraduate admission. Would it be better to accept admission to a top tier or go through with a stress free pre-med experience (assuming I get in)? I really do not see myself doing anything other medicine.
Thank You!
Todd Johnson says
Chandra,
The good news in the US is that all of the accredited medical schools are of very high quality. Students in all of the medical schools do fine in residency placement if they rank in the top 1/2 of their class. Residency placement can be more difficult if you are in the lower half of our class regardless of the medical school. Whether to go with a BS/MD program or a regular program is really a personal decision. You have to weigh all of the factors in deciding what to do but I think you should keep prestige out of the equation because it really doesn’t mean much in most cases.

Hello,
I am a US citizen and a Canadian citizen currently living in Canada. I am in grade 12 and the deadlines for most BS/MD programs in the States have passed, so I was wondering if it is possible to apply next year after starting undergrad here.
Also, my brother (also a US and Canadian citizen) is currently in grade 10.
1) What universities have a BS/MD program for international students?
2) What are the general entry requirements and prerequisites?
Thanks in advance,
Jamal
Todd Johnson says
Jamal,
Most BS/MD programs are for current high school students only and will not accept transfer students so they are not an option for you.
Here is a link to the BS/MD programs that accept international students: http://cap1.wpengine.com/bsmd-programs/bsmd-programs-admit-international-students/
Typically an international student will need near perfect grades and test scores along with health care related volunteering, research and doctor shadowing to be competitive. It is more difficult for international students to be admitted than US citizens.

Hello,
I graduate from high school 2 years ago and I meet the requirements but I took 2 years off school to work and figure out what I wanted to do .
Would that be a problem if i want to get in the BS , MD program ?
Todd Johnson says
Isabelle,
The majority of BS/MD programs will only consider current high school students so unfortunately, you would not be a good candidate for most of the programs.
Rashi says
What are the requirements in order to be eligible for the bs/md programs?
Renu says
Hello,
I’m from India interested in pursuing a MD program from Canada. I am currently doing my bachelor of engineering as I heard that a four year undergraduate degree was necessary. Can I have some advice as to what are the required criteria for applying to a med school in Canada and what are the exams I have to prepare myself for?
Radz says
Hi for the Combined BS / MD Program, how would an American citizen studying abroad be considered – “A levels”, International student or American?
Thank you.
Todd Johnson says
It depends a bit on the program but at the majority you will be considered as a US citizen. A few BS/MD programs require students to go to high school in the US and for those you would not be a candidate.
Sara says
Hello,
I am a US citizen, studying in India and have been for the past 8 years. I am currently in my last year of high school, doing the IB Diploma. I take Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, Math, English and Spanish. I am the founder and editor in chief of my school newsletter, am part of the student council, volunteered once a week for six months at my school health center and participated in the Student Leadership Conference on Development at the UN through video conference. My school being one of the select few from around the world. I have a lot of other minor extracurricular activities but none of them are related the medical field in anyway. I was wondering if all of this is fairly enough at getting into a BS/MD program in the US. I haven’t taken the SAT’s yet but I will be soon. I would also like to know what universities I am more likely to be accepted into.
Thank you so much for your time.
Todd Johnson says
Sara,
Without a SAT or ACT score it is hard to say how competitive you might be for a BS/MD program. I would certainly suggest doing more regular health care volunteering. They like to see it done weekly, even for an hour or two but done for as long as possible. Many students will have several years of weekly volunteering. You would also want to make sure you have some doctor shadowing experience.

Cam Elton says
My son is a US citizen but brought up in Canada, where he is in 10th grade in a high school. He wants to go to the US for undergrad studies and then medical school. What are his admission chances and options for BS/MD program in the US?
Todd Johnson says
Hetvi,
There are only about 14 BS/MD programs in the US that will consider international students, including Canadian students. These programs are extremely competitive requiring in most cases near perfect GPA and near perfect test scores in addition to significant research and volunteering. There are literally only a handful of seats each year for international students. The majority of these also require that the MCAT be taken usually by the end of junior year in college.
Todd Johnson says
Cam,
As a US citizen he will be eligible for most BS/MD programs. A few require students go to US high schools but that is the exception.
Marie J says
Dear Mr Johnson,
Do you happen to know about the Rutgers NJMS combined applications? I see there are 6-7 undergrad schools through which one can apply to the combined program, but really can’t figure out if one can apply only through only one or more. So is the GW program through there itself and through St bonaveture. Are these ok to apply through more than one undergrad to the same Med school?
For instance, Albany Med clearly states one can apply through just one undergrad out of three. I was not able to find any info for the schools mentioned above. Any info you might have regarding this, if you share will be highly helpful.
Thank you so much for your valuable info and insight. The book is really helping us a lot.
Marie
Todd Johnson says
Marie,
Which schools to apply to when there are multiple undergrad colleges varies depending on the program. You are correct that with the 3 colleges associated with Albany Medical College, you can only apply to one of the three programs. With GW and St. Bonaventure, because they are such different undergrad colleges the expectation is that you would only apply to the one you like the best. Not both colleges. For the BS/MD programs associated with Rutgers New Jersey Medical School it doesn’t usually matter that much if you apply to more than one college although they should be similar colleges. For example, Drew and the Stevens Institute of Technology are options but they are different colleges and one student would probably not be happy at both. Pick the one you like the best and apply there.
Teena says
Does going to an IB program help?
Todd Johnson says
Teena,
If you are taking a full IB diploma program, that is certainly something that colleges like to see because they recognize the level of academics in the program. That being said, you still need to do well in the classes and get high predictive scores.
