Over the years we have had many students apply to, and get accepted to, Boston University’s Seven-Year Liberal Arts/Medical Education Program. For the most part their application is fairly straightforward but one thing always confused me.
The recommendation of a SAT Subject Test in a foreign language.
Every year we would have students tell us that they couldn’t apply to the BU program because they didn’t have the Subject Test in a foreign language. And every year we would tell the students the same thing: We have had numerous students get accepted into this program even without the foreign language subject test. But why did they have it as a recommendation?
A few months ago I was touring colleges in Boston and had a chance to meet with the person in charge of undergraduate admissions for the BS/MD program. When asked about the foreign language requirement he indicated that it really wasn’t a factor in admissions at all. The only reason they have that recommendation is that if a student has the foreign language subject test they may be able to avoid the foreign language requirement at BU. This would make completing the program in the 7 years easier.
So, if you are interested in the BS/MD program at BU, don’t worry about the SAT Subject Test in a foreign language. You can still apply even if you don’t have this test.
