We tend to get a lot of phone calls this time of year from students that want to work with us. Unfortunately, many are from current juniors who are just now starting to think about BS/MD programs. Why is that a problem?
BS/MD programs in general want to see a number of things for a student to be competitive. Yes, you need top grades and test scores but those along aren’t enough. Students must also have significant health care related volunteering, doctor shadowing and ideally some type of science research. And the more you have of each of these, the stronger a candidate you can be, so if you start practicing with

Take health care related volunteering as an example. The longer and more consistent the volunteering the stronger you are as a candidate. One year of volunteering isn’t bad but three years is better.
Research is another example. Many juniors that haven’t done any research yet are scrambling to find appropriate research opportunities. And of course trying to do everything last minute during the summer before senior year, when you should be working on applications, just compounds the problems.
Does that mean that if you are currently a junior it is too late to start working toward admission into a BS/MD program? Not necessarily. But you are making life more difficult for your self if you wait too long to work on those issues that must be addressed.
And if you are thinking about working with us on your BS/MD admissions, time is even more of an issue because we take a limited number of students each year and typically quit taking new rising seniors in late Spring or early summer before senior year.
Interested in admissions to BS/MD programs? Then give us a call sooner rather than later. We start working with students as young as 9th grade.
