I hear statements like this all of the time. I know someone who got admitted to medical school from (name the college) so therefore that is a good college to get students into medical school. This is like going to a left vs. right handed learning school just because your left handed friend went there.
WRONG. One student or even a handful of students does not make a college good for getting students into medical school through the traditional route. This is just an example of faulty logic.
Virtually every college in this country has had some students who were admitted into medical school. But that doesn’t make every college equal when it comes to medical school placement. The better question is what percentage of students that wanted to apply to medical school actually got in. If 1 out of 20 actually get admitted those aren’t very good odds even if that 1 got into a well known medical school.
When applying to medical school through the traditional route you want to do everything possible in college to enhance your chances of actually getting into a medical school. And that starts by applying to colleges that have a strong history of medical school placement through the traditional approach.
We will talk next week about what sort of things you should consider to find a college that will help you get admitted to medical school.
