Doctor shadowing is one of the core requirements when applying to a BS/MD program. I have discussed before who to shadow and the number of recommended hours of shadowing. But Covid has caused many doctors and clinics to stop offering shadowing opportunities. If you are in the position of not being able to find a doctor to shadow, what do you do? Virtual doctor shadowing to the rescue.
What is virtual doctor shadowing? Just what it sounds like. There are a number of websites that have sprung up that offer the opportunity to shadow a doctor without leaving the comfort of your home. There are a number of these websites but some that I have recommended in the past include Prehealth Shadowing, Clinical Shadowing and Virtual Shadowing. These sites all provide free shadowing opportunities.
Virtual shadowing has worked well for those times when in person shadowing was not possible. While some students have had only virtual shadowing, it can be helpful to also get some in person shadowing if possible. Medical schools have been very accepting of virtual shadowing experiences if you can’t get an in person experience. But having the in person experience of shadowing a doctor is the best option if available.
