The National Association for College Admission Counseling has a new report out entitled “Reaching the Wired Generation: How Social Media is Changing College Admission.” So what does that have to do with you?
The author of the report spoke with 453 colleges throughout the US including private and public colleges and big and small colleges. According to the report, 26% of colleges say that they research potential students using search engines and 21% say they use social networking sites to check students out.
In other words, 1 out of 4 colleges is checking you out on the internet.
There have of course been discussions in the past about the use of the internet by admissions officers to check out potential students but it was generally believed to be relatively unusual. The admissions officers interviewed indicated that they checked students out primarily if they were a candidate for a scholarship or if they were applying to a program with limited space.
Still, keep this in mind if you are thinking about posting the pictures of that great party from last weekend. It might cost you more than you thought.
