According to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) there are 50 BS/MD programs available. Unfortunately, that number is not even close.
Traditionally, when people talk about BS/MD programs they are talking about programs where students apply to college and medical school at the same time. Several of the programs listed by the AAMC are actually programs that are available after the student has started college. For instance, the Junior Honors Medical Program at the University of Florida College of Medicine, although called a BS/MD program, actually has students apply to the medical school during their sophomore year in college. Several of the BS/MD programs listed by the AAMC are of this type of program.
Moreover, there are many actual BS/MD programs that are not listed by the AAMC.
So, how many colleges have agreements with medical colleges for a true BS/MD program? Around 120. Yes, there are about 120 colleges that admit freshman to a BS/MD program associated with the college. This is a somewhat fluid number because some programs have closed in the past few years and several new ones have begun. But if you are looking to apply to one of these programs there are many more available than the AAMC lists.
I am constantly asked for a list of the programs. I also have seen lists of programs on other websites that are so woefully wrong that it is misleading to anyone try to understand these programs. So, I decided to provide the list to my faithful readers.
A brief note before the list. This is a fluid list. Programs are created and programs end on a regular basis. To the best of my knowledge, this list is accurate as of the date of this post. If anyone is aware of another BS/MD program, please let me know and I will add it to the list.
These programs are the true BS/MD programs where you apply as a high school senior. These are not programs where you apply to medical school as a freshman or sophomore in college.
Some medical schools have BS/MD programs with different undergraduate colleges and the list indicates the undergraduate college and the medical school if they differ. If only one school is listed it is both the college and medical school.

Max Qiao says
Dear Todd, Can Chinese students apply for BS-MD programs? My son studies in China’s high school. His dream is to pursue MD. I found BS/MD is a good option, although it is competitive. But few Chinese applicants apply for it. Is it possible for them to apply?
thanks,
Max

Umadevi says
Todd,
what is the chance of getting acceptance into BS/MD program for an Asian student from CA ?
I heard the % allocated to Asian ethnicity is very less and so it is very competitive for an student from Asian ethnicity
Todd Johnson says
Umadevi,
It is true that being Asian and applying to many of the highly selective colleges can be challenging. However, the majority of students applying to the BS/MD programs are of Asian decent and that bias doesn’t really appear in admissions to these programs.
jean says
My Daughter is enroll now in a Early College High School . She will graduate from High School with more than 45 college credit is that a problem to get in one of those BS/MD program.
Todd Johnson says
Jean,
As long as the credits are not going toward a degree, like associate of arts, then having numerous college credits should not be a problem for the BS/MD programs.
