I mentioned in an earlier post that there are about 70 BS/MD programs. Since that time I have had numerous requests for the list of programs. So, I decided to provide the list to my faithful readers.
A brief note before the list. This is a fluid list. Programs are created and programs end on a regular basis. To the best of my knowledge, this list is accurate as of the date of this post. If anyone is aware of another BS/MD program, please let me know and I will add it to the list.
These programs are the true BS/MD programs where you apply as a high school senior. These are not programs where you apply to medical school as a freshman or sophomore in college.
Some medical schools have BS/MD programs with different undergraduate colleges and the list indicates the undergraduate college and the medical school if they differ. If only one school is listed it is both the college and medical school.
Here is the list:

Shyam says
I applied to Drexel BS/MD program 2011 and applied to six affiliated schools. I have ACT 35 and SAT 2350 and thought I will get admitted easily to a good associated UG program of DUCOM. This year DUCOM started assigning the UG program to the accepted students without giving any choice. Even with my credentials, DUCOM assigned me to a D-grade UG program that is totally unacceptable. I visited many of these affiliated universities and most of them are worthless as educational institution. At the last moment, I am being forced to change my plan and give up Drexel BS/MD. I am very sad. This should be a warning for 2012 applicants of Drexel BS/MD program.
Todd Johnson says
Shyam,
Sorry to hear about your disappointment. It is always the right of the program like Drexel that has various associated undergraduate programs to decide where to admit students.
Despite your concerns, each of the colleges associated with Drexel’s medical school are good colleges for some students.
Your concern does point out that when students are considering where to apply to BS/MD programs they must consider both the possible undergraduate college as well as the associated medical school.
Shyam says
Dr. Johnson,
You are quite right. DUCOM associated colleges are good, kind of like “four-year community colleges” with ivy league tuition and no real scholarship for Drexel BS-MD students. I believe it will cost most students $300-400K loan to complete the program. I wonder whether part of the undergraduate tuition fee is going to DUCOM.
J C Lau says
Lehigh University which is affiliated with Drexel Medicine is a good choice. My son chose that over Villanova and RPI/Albany Med and Union/Albany. He is now busy working in his first year at Drexel, where the rigors of the program will test any students with 2300+ SATs.
shyam says
JC,
Good for your son. However, Drexel changed their strategy. Now, every accepted student is assigned one and only one UG college and that is not negotiable if you want to go to DUCOM.
SC says
Shyam,
I have to disagree with your statement, I also applied to DUCOM programs this year (2011) and was accepted into both programs I applied to: the Drexel/Drexel program and the Ursinus/Drexel program. They decide on acceptances based on the pool it comes from, meaning that if you were at the top of one pool and got into Drexel with that UG program but were not at the top of other pools, you would have only been admitted into one program.
Todd Johnson says
I have had numerous students go to one of the Drexel affiliated programs but none this year. In the past at least they followed the approach mentioned by SC of evaluating each undergraduate program on its own merits so that a students applying to more than one of the undergraduate programs could be accepted to more than one or just one.
I will try to contact Drexel in the next week or two to see if this policy has changed. If I find anything out I will let the list know.
Gregory Pence says
Also, we are one of the few BS/MD programs to give out-of-state tuition scholarships to qualified students. For National Merit Scholars, the deal is even better.
Todd Johnson says
Gregory,
Thanks for the note. In my book I note the special financial aid awards that UAB gives to students in the Early Medical School Acceptance Program. I was not aware of the special award for National Merit Scholars. I will note that in the next edition of the book.

what is the deadline to apply to mcv
mary allen says
should i choose a 8 year combined program over
an ivy league program?
Todd Johnson says
Mary Allen,
If you are referring to Virginia Commonwealth the deadline was November 15, 2011. For your other question there is no right or wrong answer to whether to attend an 8 year BS/MD program or an Ivy League college. It depends on what you want from college. In my experience most students will choose the BS/MD program but I have had students choose an Ivy League college instead.
UTstudent says
I do not see the University of Texas Austin in combination with Southwestern and Health Science Center Houston on this list. I was wondering why.
Todd Johnson says
UTstudent,
I have not updated the list on the blog since I did the post. The current list of all of the programs, including UTA, are in my book, BS/MD Programs-The Complete Guide: Getting Into Medical School from High School.
Zehra says
So all these programs don’t require a Bachelor degree for acceptance? What classes do they require a potential candidate to take?
Todd Johnson says
Zehra,
BS/MD programs include the undergraduate degree as part of the whole program. Potential candidates are high school students that typically should take chemistry, biology and physics as well as calculus.
Zehra says
Thank you, and should those classes be Pre-AP or AP? And what GPA is preferred? I have a 3.8 as a Sophomore right now and I’m hoping to boost it next year by taking many AP classes. I really appreciate all your help
Nisha says
Dr. Johnson,
I have been looking into several bs/md programs in the midwest. I am particularly interested in Wayne State, Case Western Reserve, St. Louis University, and several others. I have been volunteering at hospitals, shadowing doctors, and participating in extracurricular activities. I have an above average transcript with a 4.3 G.P.A and 8 AP courses. I was wondering if you had any suggestions as to what else I could do to increase my chances of being accepted into a bs/md program.
Todd Johnson says
Nisha,
If you can get some research experience at a local college that would be good. BS/MD programs know that students who have an interest in medicine also have an interest in research which is why they consider such things. You should also look to see what you can do to show leadership and maturity as both of these are factors in BS/MD admissions.
RG says
Hi my son got into Kean.drexel 8 year BS/MD. Does anybody know how the kean University is? thanks
CN says
Georgia Regents University (previously named Augusta State University until it recently merged with the Medical College of Georgia)also offers a 7 year b.s./m.d. program now! however, their website is still under construction so you may not be able to find it on the website, but if you call, they’ll provide some info. I’m a senior in high school this year, and it’s the program I’m considering.
Fighter says
Can foreign MD apply to start BS/MD, if so what is the prerequisite if not US high school graduate
Zayena says
I’m a senior in high school but I have a 3.0 gpa and a very low score on the SAT’s but I was wondering if I can fix all that but still be able to get into one of these programs. I recently just found out about these kind of programs this summer. And you basically need to be off the charts with all the comments I’ve been reading. I really want to get into a good BS/MD program on the east coast
Todd Johnson says
Fighter,
BS/MD programs are designed for high school students who have not had college yet. Because of this a foreign MD would not be eligible for these programs.
Todd Johnson says
Zayena,
Unfortunately, there is virtual no chance of acceptance into a BS/MD program with a 3.0 GPA.
Nishal says
Hi,
I have a 3.8 gpa and a 2300 SAT Score and a 800’s on the Chemistry and Biology SAT. And a 780 on the history and Math 2 Tests. I have 200 volunteering hours at a hospital and 150 hrs at a nursing home. I also have completed a medical ambassador program over the summer (high school students) and mini medical school (8 lectures on different specialities of medicine). I did 6 weeks of paid tuberculosis research at Draper lab, in Boston MA. I volunteer and research at the pathology lab at the hospital and help with an engineering research project. I also participated in the high school medical volunteer program for Doctors without borders in Cambodia for 2 weeks.
How strong is my application? How many people do you know that got excepted to a BS MD program with a 3.8 gpa? What are the best BS MD programs for me to apply to,
Thanks,
Nishal
Nishal says
I also am the president and founder of the UNICEF club at my school and secretary for the Key Club at my school.
Todd Johnson says
Nishal,
You don’t say if your GPA is weighted or unweighted. If unweighted, it is a little low for BS/MD programs but I have certainly seen students admitted with similar GPA’s. The rest of your application sounds fairly typical for the students that I work with. I can’t say what programs might be appropriate because there are to many variables for me to give an appropriate response.
Nishal says
What bs md programs were the people with a 3.8 gpa admitted into? Also, I have a 3.89 gpa unweighted? Does that give me a better chance
Killua Z. says
Hey Todd, all these profiles and accepted applications seem very overwhelming and very discouraging. Would you say that someone with an okay gpa and an ACT around a 30 would have VERY low chances of being accepted into a BS/MD program? I think that you’re overrating the programs, because some programs might not have many stellar applications sent in, forcing them to accept mediocre applications. Say I wanted to apply to a program like the U of SAlabama, and I have amazing extracurricular activities as well. Would my chances be next to nothing?
Todd Johnson says
Killua,
You need strong grades at all of the programs. Typically if you look at the students who are admitted, they usually have at least a 3.8 unweighted GPA and often much higher. A 30 on the ACT is the minimum score to be considered at many of the programs so a higher score would be more competitive.
UAB had over 220 applicants for 10 spots last they reported stats. Trust me when I say that while there might be a few students in that group with less than stellar grades and test scores, the majority of students are very strong. I have worked with 100’s of students applying to these programs and “mediocre” students are not regularly getting admitted.
Ashley says
Hi,
I was wondering in your experience what bs mds have students with 93 gpa gotten into. I know that most expect 4.0’s but I would still like to give it a shot. I have very unique medical experiences compared to the average applicant and I was wondering if there were bs md’s that look at a student more holistically such as Siena/ amc. Oh and also, I live in New York!
Ashley says
Also to add on to my previous question, my gpa is unweighted. Weighted, it would be more than a 4.0 bc I am taking 9 APs and all possible honors classes by the time of graduation. I would also like to know if I would be applicable for bs/do programs. Thank you
Ronald Elder says
Hello Mr. Johnson, what are my chances of getting into any BS/MD program?
Like nothing specifically but any program in general.
ACT: 34
GPA Unweighted/Weighted: 3.67/4.3
(I have taken extremely hard classes like AP Calc BC Soph year, but in all my science classes, AP Physics, AP Bio, and accel Chem I have gotten A’s)
Eboard of two clubs
National Honor scoiety
1,250+ service hours
Service recognized by Chicago Tribune
Part of Math team that won state twice
Varsity table tennis team 2 years
JV golf team
High school gold honor roll all 5 semesters so far
100+ shadow hours
100+ Hospital Volunteer Hours
Todd Johnson says
Ronald,
While anything is possible, it is fairly unlikely that most BS/MD programs would consider you with a 3.67 GPA. Normally most programs won’t consider anyone with less than a 3.8 unweighted GPA. They don’t usually use weighted GPA’s because every high school weights differently. The rest of your resume looks fairly good but the GPA will make things difficult.
Ming says
Hello Mr. Johnson,
I would like to ask what requirements I have to meet in order to have a fair chance for getting into a BS/MD school, as well as minimal requirements?
Could you please list requirements regarding GPA, the courses you recommend, SAT/ACT scores, hospital hours, other volunteer hours, etc.? Thank you so much.
Todd Johnson says
Ming,
There are no absolutes in terms of academics for colleges in general or BS/MD programs specifically. Generally you will want the highest possible GPA, preferably at least a 3.9 unweighted GPA while taking a challenging course load including AP and/or IB classes if available. For test scores you will want a minimum 30 on the ACT and a higher score will make you more competitive. For the SAT you will want at least a 1,450 and higher is better. You will need significant health care related volunteering including patient contact, ideally on a regular basis for several years, having some science research will be helpful and you will need some doctor shadowing. These are all to be a basic candidate. Things like leadership and something that shows maturity will help. What you write for your essays can also make a big difference as does the interviews typically required.
I hopie this helps.
Rahul Bhaskar says
Hello Mr. Johnson,
How strong of an applicant am I in BS/MD program
ACT:34
SAT:1530
Subject test math 2: 800
AP scores:
Calc BC:5
Bio:4
Physics 1: 4
US History:4
GPA 3.72 (unweighted)
I will have taken 12 AP classes by the end of high school, and Calc 3/ Linear Algebra which I just took junior year.
100+ shadow hours
100+ Hospital Volunteer Hours
VP of HOSA club at school and lots of solid extracurricular, community service extremely strong and recognize by local newspaper
Todd Johnson says
Rahul,
Based on your GPA you are most likely not a strong candidate for most BS/MD programs. Many require a minimum of 3.8 unweighted GPA and a 3.9 or better will make you a stronger candidate. There can be exceptions for students with an unusual background.
