Several months ago I toured DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. Despite the university name, DePauw is a small liberal arts college. DePauw also has a school of music that offers a bachelor of music degree in a variety of instruments.
DePauw has about 2,400 students and 24% are ethnic minorities including international students. The university has a loose affiliation with the Methodist church although like many other church affiliated colleges, this is not the type of religion that forces its beliefs on others. I specifically asked our tour guide who was a Hindu if she felt comfortable as a non-Christian and she affirmed that indeed she did not feel uncomfortable at all.
Approximately 70% of students at DePauw belong to a fraternity or sorority. Parties are open to everyone on campus even if they are not part of the greek society.
There are several newer buildings on campus which is about 175 acres in size. The upkeep of the older buildings was adequate but several looked a little more worn that I would have expected. There is also a nature park several miles from campus that has a new Institute for Ethics.
DePauw has five honors programs known as the Programs of Distinction. These honors programs offer internships, research opportunities and independent study for students in the Programs. The five programs include The Honor Scholar Program, The Information Technology Associates Program, The Management Fellows Program, The Media Fellow Program and The Science Research Fellows. Each program caters to students with a different interest.
The acceptance rate into DePauw has been decreasing in the past few years and most recently was about 57%. The SAT critical reading mid range is 530 to 650 while the math mid range is 550 to 670. Mid range of ACT scores is 24 to 29. 53% of the students recently admitted where in the top 10% of their high school classes.
DePauw meets on average 90% of the students financial need. The also have a number of merit based financial awards a few of which provide full tuition, room, board and books for all 4 years of college.
If you are looking for a good strong college with a great deal of school spirit and reasonable admissions standards you may wish to consider DePauw.
