Summer is a great time to become involved in activities that can help in the college admissions process. Today I am going to talk about a few of the options for students who are looking for something to do this summer.
Get a job. Summer employment is a necessity for some students who have to work to pay for college. But work can also be a good choice for other students. Holding a job shows maturity and every college likes to see an applicant that is mature. If you can find a job that is consistent with your focus that will also strengthen your resume.
Do research. Research is a great summer activity if you are considering BS/MD programs or have an interest in majoring in science in college. But, science isn’t just for future doctors and scientists. I have had students do research in other fields like history and political science as well.
Volunteer. Volunteering shows you care about other people. Every college likes to see students who care about someone other than themselves. It doesn’t matter what type of volunteer activity you do although it is particularly helpful if you can find some volunteer opportunity that is consistent with your interests. Interested in history? See if you can find a local history center where you can volunteer.
Take a class. A number of students that I work with take additional classes during the summer that they don’t have time to take during the school year. Often these are classes at local colleges. If you have academic interests that you haven’t been able to satisfy during the school year, summer classes can be a great way to fulfill that interest.
If you want help finding summer activities there are businesses like Enrichment Alley that provide information about summer programs including academic and volunteer programs.
The key point is not that you have to do a particular summer activity. However, students who want to be the most competitive will spend their summer activity doing something.
What are you doing this summer?
