Berea College is a wonderful example of a great college that is unknown to most students trying to find the right college. Located in a small town south of Lexington, Kentucky, Berea was founded in 1855 as a coeducational and interracial college.
Berea is a work college which means that all students are required to work a minimum of 10 hours a week. That isn’t too much to ask for students attending a college that does not charge any student with tuition. Yes, you read that right; Berea is tuition free for all students. Their focus is on educating students from low income families and they have income guidelines that families must be below to qualify for a Berea education. Berea also has a commitment to Kentucky and the Appalachian region and 75% of students come from this area of the country.
With more than 70 clubs and organizations there is plenty of things for students to do when they aren’t studying or working. If you are interested in a progressive college with solid academics and an unbeatable cost, Berea should be on your list of colleges to consider.
