US News has a new article entitled “Late-Minute College Options Abound for Fall 2011” in which I am quoted. As the article points out, you have a few options.
If you are stilling looking for a college because you didn’t have any safety colleges on your list, you have 3 basic options.
Option 1. Take a gap year. My favorite option for most students who don’t have a college at this point for fall 2011. Taking the gap year allows you to redo the college search this next year while including an appropriate range of colleges to which you might be accepted. This option gives you the most options for colleges.
Option 2. Find a college that still has openings. The National Association for College Admission Counseling just released a list of colleges that still have openings for fall 2011. There are some good colleges on this list but you have many fewer choices than if you take a gap year.
Option 3. Attend a community college. This option is best for you if you have not been engaged in the college selection process until now and just realized that you don’t have any where to attend in the fall. Most community colleges use open enrollment which means that they accept anyone who applies.
All is not lost if you still don’t have a college to attend in the fall. But don’t wait. The sooner you decide how to proceed, the better your long term results are likely to be.
