Many students applying to selective colleges plan on taking SAT subject tests. They are required by the most selective colleges for students who take the SAT. If you take the ACT, some of the colleges will waive the requirement for the subject tests. But, what about students who are applying to BS/MD programs?
I always tell my students that are applying to BS/MD programs that they should take the SAT subject tests. There are a number of BS/MD programs that require these tests even when the undergraduate college doesn’t normally require it. If you have taken the subject tests you leave open the option of applying to those programs that require the tests.
I would recommend taking at least the Math Level 2 and Chemistry subject tests. These two tests are the most commonly required. If you are going to take a third test I would recommend Biology since there are a few programs that want that subject test.
Ideally, the subject tests should be taken by spring of junior year. For the BS/MD programs you should be trying to achieve at least a 700 on each test and closer to 750 is great.
