This is a story to prove that there is sometimes no logic in college admissions.
Colleges regularly tell counselors like me that stupid tricks won’t get a student admitted. They joke about the student who sent home made cookies in the hope that it would help get them admitted. It didn’t.
Or the student who camps out in front of the admissions office holding a sign about how much they want to attend that college. This just makes colleges want to get a restraining order against the student.
But, apparently, the University of Michigan likes stupid tricks. A student on their wait list put together a video singing about why he wanted to attend Michigan. I first read about this several weeks ago and my first thought was that this kid had no chance. But, lo and behold, Michigan admitted him because he sent them the singing video.
Personally I don’t care who the University of Michigan admits. That is a decision that they make in the best interests of their university. However, I don’t want to hear them complain if they are inundated in the future with applicants doing everything imaginable to get admitted.
And the saddest thing about this is that while this one student’s antics worked, it will rarely work in the future. However, many students will waste their time trying to be unusual in the believe that it will help their chances of admissions.
