Lynn O’ Shaughnessey at the College Solution has an interesting blog entry talking about one of the efforts that large universities are making to improve the educational experience for their students. Basically, some large universities are setting up interest groups for first year students to provide smaller breakout groups for large lecture classes. This is similar to what colleges do for lab classes related to a large science lecture class.
One of the greatest problems with many large universities is the size of some of the introductory classes and the inability of students to understand the subject as well in such a large class. It is good to see that some of the large universities are starting to address this problem.
