So, it has happened once again. I just spoke to a student who did well on the ACT test but was not happy with their SAT score. The student was all upset because “everyone knows that you need the SAT for the best colleges.”
I’m not even going to comment on the “best” colleges statement because I have addressed that issue before.
The real problem with the student’s statement is that what “everyone knows” is just dead wrong. Colleges consider the SAT and ACT equally. Every year I have students who are admitted to BS/MD programs and Ivy League colleges who have only submitted an ACT score. Just because everyone around you is taking the SAT, doesn’t mean the SAT is the only test or even the best test for you.
The biggest difference between these tests for your purposes is which one do you do better on. That’s it. Focus on the best test for you and don’t worry about whether it is the SAT or ACT.
Because colleges certainly don’t care.
