Sewanee:The University of the South has announced that they are going test optional beginning with the freshman class of 2010. For those of you not familiar with Sewannee they are a well regarded selective small liberal arts college in Tennessee.
Sewanee has indicated that those students who do not submit test scores will be required to submit a graded academic paper and have an evaluative interview with a representative of Sewanee. An evaluative interview is one that will be used in the admission decision.
I think Sewanee’s use of alternatives to the standardized test is a good idea and will hopefully give the college a better feel for those students not submitting scores. While some students will worry about the need for an interview, preparing for an interviewed should just be looked at as one step in the application process. I have previously discussed some tips for a successful college interview including questions that might be asked during an interview.
